2nd Edition
Since writing my “Hands-on Virtual Computing” textbook in 2018 a
lot has changed, especially with VMware products. While the basic concepts laid
down in the “Hands-on Virtual Computing” textbook are still very relevant
today, many of the lab activities that were written for vSphere version 6.0 no
longer work as written using the vSphere 7.0 software currently available from
VMware’s download page.
To allow students to do the activities I am in the process of
updating all the VMware activities to work with vSphere 7.0 which is currently
available on MyVMware download page. Chapter 8 vCenter activities, Chapter 9
Horizon activities as well as Chapters 5 & 6 Hyper-V activities will be
added in the near future.
Use the following links to access PDF files containing the
re-written activities for “Hands-on Virtual Computing” by chapter number
(non-VMware chapters are not included at this time, but will be added in the
future).

VMware vSphere
Lab Companion
To help readers get the most out of the original Hands-on Virtual
Computing textbook, I have written the VMware vSphere Lab Companion eBook for
VMware activities in chapters 1-7, along with the first few activities in of
chapter 8.
The activities in “VMware vSphere Lab Companion – Book I” cover the
free version of the VMware vSphere ESXi hypervisor using VMware Host Client as
described in chapters 1-7 (also activities 1-3 of chapter 8) of the textbook.
If you have the “Hands-on Virtual Computing” textbook, you can simply perform
the activities from this booklet in place of the textbook activities. If you do
not have the textbook, you can still have fun and learn a lot about VMware’s
vSphere by doing the activities in this booklet on their own.
By performing the activities in this booklet you will have a VMware
vSphere 7.0 virtual data center running on your desktop or notebook computer.
You can use this virtualized data center to experiment and learn more about
vSphere as well as install other trial VMware software.
Good luck and have fun Exploring vSphere…
